tips and strategies for 25-30 month olds
Below are gross motor milestones that children 25-30 month olds should be meeting. To go along with these gross motor milestones, some basic tips and strategies are included to help your child meet these milestones.
walks down 4 steps without support
TIPS/STRATEGIES:
- Hold one or both of the child's hands and model foot placement on stairs. Ask the child to imitate you steps.
- Give the child opportunities to step down the last two or three steps on a flight of stairs, rather than carrying the child all the way down.
- Give the child a small toy to carry down the last two or three steps as you stand close by.
- Help the child descend steps to get off a piece of playground equipment.
walks backwards up to 10 feet
TIPS/STRATEGIES:
- Model walking backwards with a pull toy. Have child attempt to pull the toy on their own.
placing one foot on each step, walks up 4 steps
TIPS/STRATEGIES:
- Hold one or both hands and model foot placement on the stairs. Ask the child to imitate your steps as you provide assistance as needed.
- Place cut outs of feet on steps, having right foot cut out red and left foot blue. Place right and left foot cutouts on opposite steps and ask your child to step onto the cutouts.
takes 5 steps while walking on tip-toes
TIPS/STRATEGIES:
- Hold the child's hands out to the side and demonstrate standing on the toes. Ask the child to stand on their toes with you. Count to 3 before returning to standing flat footed.
- Hold on object just out of reach overhead and ask the child to stand on tip-toes to get the object.
- Place several toys on counters high enough that the child must stand on tip-toes to retrieve them. Make this a fun game.
- Take the child near a window high enough that the child must stand on tip-toes to see out. Ask the child to look outside to see an object.
